I just can't see myself staying with TypePad in the longterm. For anything less than 15 dollars a month, you're stuck using any number of particularly boring layout and template designs, with no ability to edit the template itself, which seems borderline tech-extoritionist. I appreciate the ease of the interface, but the lack of flexibility is getting to me.
Consider this a notice to the TypePad people, and a request for any other suggestions regarding blogging software. [Foreshadow: I'll probably start up another Movable Type installation, but I'm open to alternatives.]

I'm actually a fan of Typepad, mostly because I'm kind of tired of doing systems administration and want to devote my energies to what I write, not how to post, but that's just me.
Typepad does allow you pretty full control over the templates, but sadly you have to pay for the more expensive account levels, I think...

Yeah, I'm just not sure I want to pay that just in order to edit a template. I agree it's more work, which I'm not supre happy about, but I'm more than willing to do it if it means I get to have certain things structured how I most like them. It's the fact that in order to do more work I must pay more money that I find bothersome.

Yeah, you've definitely got a point there. I think if I had some kind of reasonable backup strategy for my systems, I'd probably do it all myself to save money. But I find I'm getting increasingly skeptical of my own ability to keep care of personal digital archives over the long term (several major losses led to this).
I'm getting kind of enamored of Typo, the Ruby-based blogging system. One of my senior engineers just converted to it and is adding stuff like crazy to the project, so I'm keeping an eye on it. His blog has full details and is running on Typo now: http://scottstuff.net/blog/
